Believe Biblicaly

We Believe

As a Christian church, Seventh-day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures. Adventists describe these beliefs in the following ways: God wants you to know Him, scripture directs how we live, Jesus never changes, what God wants for you, God loves you, and that God keeps a family album and your picture is in it. God loves you and has a plan for your life.
CHURCH HISTORY

The Somerset Seventh-day Adventist church was born in the autumn of 1970 after Pastor Byron S. Spears conducted an evangelistic crusade at the Sandys Secondary School hall. At the end of that crusade, the Somerset Company was formed with twenty members... Today, the Somerset Church family continues “in the business of saving souls.” It has adopted as its mission statement “Reaching Out, Touching Lives.” From twenty committed members in 1970 to three hundred and sixty-four in 2009, the Somerset Church is a “Beacon of light on Beacon Hill.”

Our Pastor & Elders

“And we urge you, brethren, to
recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13; see also 1 Tim. 5:17 and Heb. 13:7, 17). Elders must be recognized by the church as strong spiritual leaders and must have good reputations both in the church and community. In the absence of a pastor, elders are the spiritual leaders of the church and by precept and example must seek to lead the church into a deeper and fuller Christian experience. Elders should be able to conduct the services of the church and minister in both word and doctrine when the assigned pastor is unavailable. However, elders should not be chosen primarily because of social position or speaking ability, but because of their consecrated lives and leadership abilities. Elders may be reelected, but it is not advisable for them to serve indefinitely. The church is under no obligation to reelect and may choose others whenever changes seem advisable. Upon the election of new elders, the former elders no longer function as elders but may be elected to other church offices. The apostle Paul called together “the elders of the church” and counseled them: “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased
with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears” (Acts 20:17, 28-31; see also 1 Peter 5:1-3).

Tithe and Offering

What does the Bible teach us about God’s invitation to us in relation to tithing? Read Deuteronomy 16:17 and Malachi 3:10.

The invitation to give comes directly from God and is based on what He has already given. No one should have to say -I have nothing to give,- because God is not asking us to seek out what we need to return. He provides first, then He asks for one tenth to be returned to Him in gratitude for His generosity, -according to the blessing . . . which He has given- (Deut. 16:17, NKJV). Where there may be uncertainty as to the outcome of first setting aside of God’s portion, God challenges us to test Him to see if He will be faithful in His promise by opening -the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it- (Mal. 3:10, NKJV). Why not take up the challenge and see the outcome?
Learn More About Tithe and Offering

Tithing aids our spiritual growth by discouraging selfishness. -He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully- (2 Cor. 9:6, NKJV). Our response to God’s generosity needs to be a demonstration of our trust in Him by willingly returning one tenth of our increase. Our first task on receipt of our personal income is to think of others by putting aside that which belongs to God first.

Paul reminds us that -God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work- (v. 8). The aim of returning a faithful tithe is not to leave us without, as we are asked to give from what we already received.
